CAENIS, THE ANGLERS CURSE, DOES NOT HINDER SPORT ON HARRAY

A cracking basket of fish wins Norman the Merkister Cup

It was one of these nights on Harray when the hatch of Caenis had to be seen to be believed. At times they were in your eyes, your mouth, ears, in every orifice imaginable! It certainly took the trout to the surface and anglers who cracked the case had tremendous sport.
A full complement of 33 anglers fished last Thursday night for the Merkister Cup. It was everybody up to the north end for the start, with only a handful of boats fishing south of the Ess Holms. Nistaben, Bankhead, and Kirkness were most popular. It seemed that it was a game of two halves, with some anglers reporting fish caught early on, and others leaving it late in the evening to put a basket together.
Norman Irvine caught steadily all night and put a tremendous basket on the scales at the end of the night winning him the trophy. Jim Bews and Kenny Adam also had top sport in their boat, as did Stewy Leslie and Ken Kennedy. Heaviest fish, again, was weighed in by Brian Foreman, a cracker at 1lb 4ozs.
It would appear that there were two or three ways to interest the fish into taking, slime line and mini lures, which certainly worked for Norm, fast sinking lines and mini lures which Jim and Kenny employed to great effect, or emergers, suspenders and dries used by others. Jim and Kenny’s baskets were probably the most remarkable as they seem to be the only anglers at the moment on Harray who seem to be catching on deep lines. Most anglers are reporting that they can bring fish up “on the hang” but they just swirl about but don’t take, most frustrating. The boys have obviously found a way to overcome this, this could be the area they are fishing, fly pattern or technique, but it is certainly working.
Fly pattern choice was critical on the night and again, it helped to have a Peach Muddler on your cast, it maybe did not catch that many trout but it certainly turns their heads and encourages them to take something else on your cast. Norskis, Emus, Erlend’s Cat, Loch Ordie Muddler, Emergers, Suspenders were all successful flies for the top rods.
It’s back to Boardhouse for the next two events, let’s hope that it will continue in good form as last month. OTFA anglers are of south again this week, fishing the prestigious Lexus European Open at the Lake of Menteith, best wishes and good luck to all six anglers.
