Two wins in a row on Boardhouse for Norman |
Sunday the 19th of July saw 33 anglers at Boardhouse for the 10am start. Forecasts earlier on in the week had everyone wondering if the competition for the WS Sinclair Cup would proceed, but it turned out that the only weather we didn’t have on the day was gale force winds. Sun, wind from every point of the compass, flat calm, thunder and rain like you would not believe to finish with at 4 o’clock. This made the fishing tricky for some, impossible for others, but all in all, there was a case to crack, and one or two anglers showed us all how it’s done.
There were two favoured drifts on the day, out of the South shore to the weeds, and down the Road Shore to the Narrows. In fact, most fish were contacted on or near a shore, with the open water extremely tiresome to fish because of the extensive weed growth, exacerbated by the very low water level for the time of year.
The winner of the last cup on Boardhouse, Norman Irvine showed the way once again with a cracking basket of trout weighing in at 12 for 7lb 4ozs. Phillipe Avril actually had more fish than Norm, but lacked the quality, but still an outstanding effort with 14 for 7lb 2ozs. Closest to these were Alan Craigie with 8 for 5lb 14ozs and Willie Smith with 10 for 5lb 13ozs. Heaviest fish of the day was a beezer, caught by Jim Bews, weighing in at 2lb 3ozs. There were good fish coming off the loch all week, with 1 1/2lb fish common, and the best reported as 3lb 4ozs, Kenny McLeod the captor.
Tactics varied slightly from the usual Hedgehogs on a floating line, although they did account for many fish. An intermediate line and Muddlers, Bumbles and Dabblers were what the top anglers were on with Green Peter Muddler, Donnie Murdo Muddler, Claret Dabbler, Claret Bumble, Kate McLaren, Red Arsed Olive Hedgehog and Orange Hedgehog quoted.
There were one or two other points of note on the day. A new land speed record was set from Boardhouse to Kirkwall, and back, posted by an angler who arrived at the site to find that he had forgotten a fairly important piece of equipment, his tackle box! He must be practising for the forthcoming trip to the Anglian Water International final at Rutland as he has been suggesting that we cut down on the amount of gear we take away in the mini bus.
There was almost a disaster at the end of the competition on Sunday when a Trawler which was on Boardhouse almost got swamped by boats returning to the site.” A trawler on Boardhouse?”, I hear you ask, well it was a perfect scale model of one, out for a trial run off the site. In fact its batteries ran down in its fight against the heavy swell of the boats and it had to be rescued by its owner using Norman’s boat.
The OTFA Team at the Lexus International at the Lake of Menteith last week came very close to qualifying for the Final at Chew Valley, just a few fish short of the 4th place required. They had a good week though, with Jimmy Grant qualifying for the Individual Final in 4th place, and member Kenny Adam, just down for the individual competition, actually coming 1st in the competition, a commendable effort considering the calibre of angler entered in this prestigious event.
It’s Boardhouse again on Tuesday the 28th of July, fishing for the Willie Windwick Cup, and who would bet on Norman making it three in a row the way he’s going at the moment.
