A delighted Billy Thomson after his Boardhouse win |
Once again the weather forecasters were less than accurate with their predictions, as the strong winds and heavy showers failed to materialise. Although some of the gusts were uncomfortable, it was basically a good fishing night with a nice wave on.
There were 31 anglers entered and as always on Boardhouse, there were those who did the right thing all night, and caught reasonable baskets of trout, and there were those who definitely did the wrong thing all night, and caught very little. With the wind in the south, every boat bar 2 started in the Tufta End, with Tufta, the Burnmouth and the Knowe favoured by most. Gradually the boats spread out over the course of the evening with the Road Shore in the narrows proving to be very productive later on.
It took 7 quality fish to win the Willie Windwick Cup, and it was a delighted Billy Thomson who came out on top with 7 fish for 5lb 6ozs, securing his first win in the Fly League since he first fished in them 10 years ago. His achievement was greeted with rapturous applause from his fellow anglers, as “Cameo Bill”, as he’s affectionately known, is a very keen fly fisherman and fly tier and rarely misses a competition, a real character. Kenny Adam came a close second with 7 for 5lb, with other good baskets from Phillipe Avril again; he certainly seems to have Boardhouse sussed, with 6 for 4lb 10ozs, which included the heaviest trout of the night at 1lb 9ozs, and Shane Stanger with 6 for 4lb 5ozs. The buzz in the car park was with regard to who had not caught on the night with the competition for the top 6 places and Fisherman of the Year closing up dramatically, with Malcolm Russell and John Munson really staking a serious claim for team places.
Tactics and flies were slightly different to what it has been, with the high and dry big hedgehogs not having the same success as previous weeks, and smaller Hedgehogs and Half Hogs fished on an intermediate line seemingly the way to go. Darker hues in Claret, Bibio and Olive also made a difference as did Muddlers, Dabblers etc in the same colours. Areas which produced were as indicated earlier, the Road Shore, Tufta etc, I decided against asking Bill where he caught his fish as geography is not his forte, with the Graveyard Bank (Loch Leven) and Stoneyfield, (a fishery in Aberdeenshire), two of his typical answers when asked the question.
The tour moves back to Harray on Sunday the 2nd of August for the Ferryloupers Trophy, I suspect it will be receiving a thorough examination between now and then from various anglers.
It gives me great pleasure in reporting the amazing capture of a monster trout caught by a very small boy last week. The trout was certainly a monster for Kirbister Loch, more noted for fish weighing 3 to the pound, this one weighed in at 3lb 6ozs! The small boy was 4 year old Erland Muir, out fishing off the Pier at the Hatchery on Kirbister. Dad Thorfinn, was having a cast himself when he heard the excited shouts from Erland, who had obviously hooked a fish. Thorfinn could not believe his eyes when the trout jumped clear of the water. After a Titanic struggle, the fish was finally netted and a beauty it was, well conditioned, with a splendid colour to it. Needless to say, Erlend is now totally hooked on fishing, as they say, and it is a great example of what enjoyment and thrills our sport can bring, they say every picture tells a story, just look at the smile on his face. see home page for photo
