Boardhouse Turns Tricky For Willie Windwick Cup

Jim Bews delighted with his Boardhouse win

Having been providing top quality sport for the previous week, come the night of the competition, Boardhouse was found to be good for a few anglers, difficult for the majority and out and out impossible for others, at its enigmatic best.
Conditions could only be described as favourable, with the only problem being a change of wind direction which switched some areas off, and others on. 39 anglers set sail with most boats heading for the Tufta, Pumphouse area, others spread out on the usual favourite drifts. The crack at the site was that there were two methods working, floating lines and Hedgehogs or intermediates and muddlers/mini lures, the choice made was crucial as right from the 6.30 start, anglers fishing on the top certainly fared better, with some reportedly netting half a dozen in the first hour! a fact that had other despondent anglers shaking their heads in disbelief, having failed to catch all night. Yes, there is no other loch like Boardhouse for instilling that urge to sell the boat, outboard, tackle, the lot, and take up golf, at least the course never changes.
There are always some anglers who manage to crack the case, Jim Bews, was well ahead of the field, weighing in an impressive 13 trout for 8lb 3ozs, securing the Willie Windwick Cup. There were numerous baskets of 7,8 and 9, with many anglers reporting lost fish, every one of which would have made a considerable difference to their placing. Worthy of note were Jim Adam’s , on a good run of form, with 9 fish for 6lb 8ozs, Jim Harcus with 10 for 6lb 7ozs and Brian Watt’s 8 for 6lb 5ozs. There were also numerous contenders for the heaviest fish but it eventually went to Brian Thomson with his specimen weighing in at 1lb 9 3/4ozs. It was also great to see two of our more experienced anglers, as keen as ever, first away from the site and away up the loch. Willie Stanger and Bobby Windwick enjoyed a good night boating 13 fish between them. I’m sure I was not alone in thinking that I hope I could do that when I’m as experienced as them.
Tactics were as aforementioned, but as the season wears on, “gen” is more difficult to extract from anglers, with everybody speaking in more general terms, but there are those who always oblige and Hedgehogs in Claret, Olive and Fiery Brown worked for some, while Erlend’s Cat, Merkister Maid, Clan Chief, Norski Lad and suspender buzzers worked for others.
The league table is very fluid at the moment with the top positions changing following each event. The two Jims, Adams and Bews have really charged up the placings, with others are finding points hard to come by. The Ferryloupers Trophy on Harray on Sunday will be crucial to many anglers, and there are reports of a few silver tourists about just to spice things up a bit.
