2017 COMPETITION PROGRAMME 2017 LEADERBOARD

AN ENDURANCE TEST TO START THE 2017 COMPETITION SEASON

Top Rod Ken Kennedy

Following last weekends false start on Swannay due to the poor weather, conditions proved to be just as testing on Sunday at Harray, fishing for the Bullen Cup, from 11am to 5pm. Fly fishing is supposed to be the gentle art, very difficult to imagine when fishing in a strong to gale force northerly wind.
Numbers were slightly down on the norm, with a few stalwarts noticeable by there absence, but 28 anglers set off, fishing for the Bullen Cup.
All but one boat headed north for some shelter, with many heading for Merkister, Decca, Esslemont and Bankhead, at the head of the wind. The tic tac at the site before the off suggested that unless conditions were quiet and midge hatching, fish could prove difficult to find, this was the case for many anglers. There was a lot of shifting about all day with anglers looking for feeding fish, they were proving very difficult to find.
There were reports of fish feeding on wee beetles in Nistaben with a couple of anglers getting sport there but it was Ballarat and Kirkness/Bankhead where the top baskets were taken, with fish found feeding on very small midge in these areas.
Top basket of the day was weighed in by Ken Kennedy with 13 fish for 8lb 3ozs, with second place going to Sandy McConnachie with 10 for 7lb 7ozs and third was Brian Forman with 7 for 5lb 10ozs which included the best fish of the day going 1lb 4ozs. The Bullen Cup is the annual Kirkwall v Stromness event where the team with the best average weight wins. This year Stromness were victorious with 13 anglers weighing in 38lb 4 ozs for an average of 2lb 15ozs to Kirkwall’s 15 anglers weighing in 36lb 4 1/4ozs fir an average of 2lb 6 2/3ozs, so Ken will take the Bullen Cup home.
Successful tactics were intermediate and midge tip lines coupled with imitative flies like Hutch’ Pennels and variants thereof, Snatchers, Sooty or Black, and Hedgehogs in dark colours. Most fish were taken in very shallow water and drop offs.
The next outing is also known Harray, an evening competition so here's hoping we get a quiet one!
