2017 COMPETITION PROGRAMME 2017 LEADERBOARD

BOARDHOUSE LOCH ON FORM FOR MIDNIGHT CUP

Top Rod Malcolm Russell

A brisk southwesterly wind and full cloud cover are classic conditions for top of the water fly fishing on Boardhouse, so there was an air of optimism around the car park at the 7pm start, fishing into the night for the Midnight Cup.

25 anglers took part and most enjoyed a very good nights competition with the fish on the feed for most of it. Boardhouse can be very enigmatic, and there is no other loch I know which can see two anglers in the boat fishing the same flies, same lines etc, and all or at least most of the fish will come to one angler, most  frustrating if you happen to be at the wrong end!

Angling effort took place all over the loch with no real hotspot, but it would be fair to say that the open water drifts across the middle at the Narrows and down off the Inkbottle shore proved popular. It was the latter that produced the two best baskets of the night, both in the same boat.
Malcolm Russell secured the Midnight Cup with a fine bag of Boardhouse trout which weighed in at 12 for 8lb 12ozs, while boat oartner for the night, Kenny McLeod also scored heavily with 9 fish for 7lb 7ozs. Others who made something of it included Norman Irvine with 9 for 7lb 2ozs, James Bews with 10 for 6lb 11ozs and John Munson with 8 for 6lb 1oz. Heavist trout of the night was weighed in by Mick Harcus and went 1lb 6ozs.
Successful tactics were not exclusively Hedgehogs, but they did take the bulk of the fish, particularly Madeira, Orange, Peach and Claret. Some did well with mini lures and deeper lines with Merkister Maid, Hulk, and the Shuggler mentioned in the debrief.
All roads lead to Hedgehog Central, Hundland, next Thursday, lets hope the trout are as up for it as the Boardhouse fish were this week.
