STENNESS LOCH PROVES TO BE VERY CHALLENGING

It was the annual trip to see what Stenness Loch had to offer last Wednesday night, with 29 anglers fishing for the Peter Miller Memorial Trophy. The wind was still in the east, and coupled with a bright sun, was never going to help the cause, and for a good night on Stenness you need everything in your favour.
Most boats headed up the loch for the start, with Redland and the Dogger proving to be very popular with no less than 8 boats on station for the 630pm start. The first hour or so usually gives you an idea as to how it’s going to fish, and I never saw one bent rod in that time, not good.
Like most other anglers, the night was spent spanging stickle backs over your shoulder as they somehow managed to grab your fly, and returning undersized trout. The last half hour proved to be crucial, with a definite take coming on, and many of the few fish which weighed in caught at this time.
The weigh in was a very short affair but surprisingly to many, there were a couple of anglers who had excelled, with 3 fish each in the bass. Winner of the Peter Miller Memorial Trophy was Colin Sutherland whose 3 fish went 2lb 14ozs, closely beating Kenny McLeod’s 3 for 2lb 12ozs into second place, although Kenny did have the heaviest fish, a bonny sea trout going 1lb 10 3/4ozs. Others who fared well included Andrew Morgan with 2 for 1lb 10ozs, Ken Kennedy with a single fish, caught in the last 5 minutes, fir 1lb 3ozs and Jim Adams, keeping the good form going with 1 fish for 1llb.
The usual tactics prevailed, with most fish found in shallow water and the flies mentioned were standard patterns for Stenness, Pinky, Soldier Palmer, Stinger and Pink Panther doing the damage.
Hopefully sanity will be regained next weekend when the show moves back to Harray. Hopefully the east wind will have gone, any other direction would undoubtedly see an improvement for all concerned.
