WS Sinclair Cup success for John Munson

Top Rod John Munson

A good turnout of 30 anglers took to the water at 7am on Saturday to fish the much loved (or hated by non-insomniacs!!) early morning event on Harray. Conditions looked quite favourable, with a light southerly wind and some Caenis hatching.  Practice gen seemed to indicate there were at least two ways of maximising sport on Harray at present. It was either a case of slogging it out on sinkers in open water, or fishing the drop offs with higher up lines. The top two rods on the day are both great exponents of the latter method and it certainly awarded them well. Top basket, securing the WS Sinclair Cup, was taken by John Munson with 10 fish for 7 lb 14.75oz, and James Harcus followed with 9 fish for 7 lb. Both fished with intermediates and small hoggy things not too far away from the stones. The top bags came from either end of the loch, with John’s fish not too far from the Merkister Hotel and James’s from the Lochside to Stoneyhill area. Other good baskets were taken by 3rd place Shane Stanger and 4th, Morris Rendall. The heaviest fish weighed 1 lb 3.5 oz and was taken by Shane Stanger.  Anglers who fished the open water found areas where there were lots of fish following up but not taking, and many of those that did were just short of the 11 inch mark. That said, the loch fished quite poorly on the day, with a rod average of just five fish. Fly patterns mentioned included Erlend’s Cat, Merky Maid, Cod and Chips, and the Naked Boris could be seen dangling from many carpark rods. The roadshow returns next to Boardhouse on Thursday 12th evening for the Willie Windwick cup, followed by the Walter Leask (draw for partners) event there on 22nd July. The draw has been made and details are on the OTFA Competition Forum Facebook page.
