Sandy McConnachie weigh's inn top basket

The word on the street was that Boardhouse was suffering from a brown algae bloom and fishing was hard, but I don’t think many believed it would be damn near terimpossible to net a fish on it. The worst of the bloom was over as the water was clearer than it’s been, but the trout were obviously still lying low.
This competition was carried over from last weekend due to high winds, and at the 10am start Ito  certainly wasn’t bonny, with a blustery NW wind, but it thankfully decreased as the day went on. A number of boats headed right up to the far end for the start, to the outlet at Hunto, too many to be fair, which flattened the area before many fish could be caught, but alternatives were few and far between.
With so little caught, there’s not much gen to fill a report, so this one will concentrate on the winning basket, one of the outstanding efforts of the season in such difficult conditions I feel, and it was Sandy McConnachie’s 5 fish for 5lb 8ozs, outstanding angling on day where 8 anglers picked up the dreaded blankety blank, cheque book and pen. It wasn’t just the number of fish in the basket but the quality was also amazing, and included the days best fish, an absolute peach going 2lb 3ozs. Others who caught a few included Andrew Morgan with 4 for 2lb 7ozs, Jimmy Grant with 3 for 2lb 1oz, Thorfinn Muir with 3 for 1lb 11 ½ ozs and Norman Irvine with 3 for 1lb 11 ozs.
Winning tactics on such a hard day are always of great interest to the rest of us, and as always, Sandy is always forthcoming with story of his day.
Having seen all the boats heading north, Sandy and Hutch chose to fish the less congested areas at Crook to the Knowe, but it was a move to the Pin near the Tufta corner which produced the fish, all caught before 1130. He fished “The Mustard” intermediate line with dark olive Hedgehog on the point catching a few, as did the Dark Loch Ordie on the bob.
With this being the second last competition of the year, the need for points intensified as a few of the contenders for places didn’t score, so the choice of venue for the Any Loch will be crucial. It’s safe to say there will be nobody on Boardhouse!
