It was a brisk, chilly, NW wind last Tuesday night for the 25 anglers fishing for the Peter Miller Memorial Trophy on Stenness. It has had the reputation lately for being very difficult, with only a few fish weighed in, but it is always capable of throwing up a few surprises.
The vast majority of boats headed north for the 6.30pm start, with the Dogger, Redland and Heathery Point favoured by many, and a few scattered about the other favoured drifts, Deepdale and Road Shore. The wind was supposed to ease a bit as the night wore on, but that never materialised and it just got colder as the night progressed.
There were reports of fish being caught very early into the competition by some, who then didn't contact a measuring fish for the duration, but there were a few who surprised us all at the weigh in.
The best basket of the night came from Alan McConnachie with 7 fish for 3lb 14ozs, winning the Peter Miller Memorial Trophy, an exceptional effort considering there were 6 anglers who drew the dreaded blank! His boat partner Thorfinn Muir shared in the bounty, with second place, putting 6 fish in the scales, going 3lb 3ozs. 13 fish to the boat is a great nights angling anywhere, but it is very encouraging for Stenness, and maybe an improved return brought by the extensive planting out of fry from the OTFA hatchery, here’s hoping the trend continues. Others who fared well included, included Norman Irvine with 5 for 2lb 8ozs, Jason Gillespie with 2 for 2lb, which included the best fish of the night, at 1lb 4ozs.
Alan and Thorfinn fished Redland, Deepdale and Road Shore, catching fish on all these drifts, the Dogger was good early on, and a few fish came from Bay of Sion.
The usual suspects fly wise included, Pink Panther, Red Palmer, Orange Palmer, Coch Zulu, Colins Killer etc with nothing really prominent. Intermediate lines of various models were the order of the day.
So that’s the annual pilgrimage to Stenness over for another year, great joy for a few happy anglers, while others wonder if they were even fishing the same loch, that’s fishing for you.
