Hard shift on Harray for the Bullen Cup
A brisk NW wind and rain dampened the spirits of the 26 anglers participating in the Bullen Cup on Sunday, fishing on Harray for the first time this season. Reports indicated that it had been fishing well in quieter conditions, when buzzers and black beetles had the fish feeding, but things turned much more difficult if there was sun and wind.
Most anglers headed north looking for the sheltered waters of Scarataing, Bankhead and Esslemont, with a few others hugging the quiet shores down the west side of the loch. It was a quiet start for most and that would only improve for a handful of anglers as the day wore on. The appearance of the sun later on actually warmed things up encouraged a few fish to take a fly, but on the whole, a fish an hour was good going.
The Bullen Cup aggregate scores for Kirkwall and Stromness are still to be tallied up but top rod on the day with 7 cracking fish for 7lb 7ozs was Ian Hutcheon, superb angling on a very difficult day. Others who managed to put a few in the basin included, Brian Forman with 6 for 5lb 10ozs, Stewart Wood with 7 for 5lb 6ozs, and Leslie Miller with 6 for 5lb 5ozs. Heaviest fish was a beezer which went 2lb 12ozs, and the happy angler who weighed it in was Scott Tulloch. The aggregate scores were as follows, Kirkwall had 15 anglers fir 47lb 9 1/2ozs which averages out at 3lb 2 3/4ozs per man. Stromness had 10 anglers weighing in 33lb 7 1/2 ozs, averaging 3lb 5 1/2ozs per man, giving Stromness the win, and their top angler was Leslie Miller, who wins the Bullen Cup, well done.
Its the SANACC National Qualifier on Harray next Sunday so no details were sought from the successful anglers, but it would be fair say that it was conventional early season tactics in quieter water that found success for the top anglers.
As if that wasn't hard enough, its a night on Stenness which is next on the programme on Tuesday night, deep joy! Tight lines.
