To say that Harray has been hard going for the last couple of weeks is putting it mildly. A combination of strong winds, cold temperatures and no fly life have had a detrimental affect on sport. Last Sunday, 28 anglers fished for the Walter Leask Cup, hoping that they would see a marked improvement.

In truth, some certainly did, but many certainly did not!
The wind was still in the NW for the 9am, although some comfort could be taken in the fact that it had dropped substantially from the 30mph of the previous day. Much of the loch was coloured so the vast majority of the boats headed north of the Ess Holms where clearer water could be found. Merkister Bay was busy as was Esslemont and Scarataing. The wind wasn't steady, it puffed up at times, but on the whole, it was a good fishing day with plenty cloud cover.
At the 3pm weigh in, everyone I first spoke to seemed to have 5 fish, but subsequently it became obvious that a few had done much better. The Walter Leask Cup was won by a delighted Sandy McConnachie with a very impressive 13 fish for 11lb 1ozs, head and shoulders ahead of the opposition, runner up was Gary Ballantyne with 8 for 8lb 8ozs, with Alan McConnachie, 8 for 6lb 9ozs, Mike Frith, 8 for 6lb 5ozs the best of the rest. Heavist fish was a cracking 2lber from Leslie Miller.
The trout had obviously been feeding hard on the very small olive buzzers as imitative Pennels, Muddlers and Midge Hogs were productive for the top anglers, with Hutch’s Pennel, Peach Muddler, Madeira Midge mentioned regularly in the post mortem. Sandy’s line of choice was the 6 foot fast tip, where others had success with DI3 and DI5 Sweep.
A change of venue to Hundland next week, hopefully the wind will calm down allowing the stoir to clear a bit before Thursday night, tight lines.
