GLORIOUS EVENING FOR MIDNIGHT CUP

Although the weather was perfect for a summer barbecue, light winds and bright sunshine are not what the fly fishermen want for an evening in the loch. Glassy calm at times, it was obvious early on that it was going to be a tough shift.
There were 27 anglers rigged up and ready to go for the 6pm start, and for the time this year, shirt sleeves were all that were required in the warm breeze which generally was from the south. An even split of boats for the start, with out off the Barony and the south shore/Tufta most popular. It was good to see the boats keeping the revs down all night, it all helps when it’s a quiet, calm night. Weed was a big problem in parts of the loch, it has obviously been encouraged to grow and reach the surface quicker than usual by the bright sunshine we have had for the last few weeks.
At this time of year, given the calm, warm night, you would expect a Caenis hatch of biblical proportions but it just never materialised and the usual collection of white headed Muddlers just did not work, I suspect what few rising fish there were, showed most interest in the hatching sedge. So, a tough night in prospect, but there are always a few anglers who get it right.
Winner of the Midnight Cup with an extraordinary basket was Sandy McConnachie, with 9 fish for 8lb 3ozs, mostly taken about the Pumphouse area, with floating line and hedgehogs his successful combo. Heaviest fish was a cracker going 1lb 12ozs, weighed in by Jason Gillespie. Others who had moderate success included Ken Kennedy with 7 for 4lb 14ozs, Jim Harcus with 6 for 4lb 6ozs, and John Munson with 6 for 3lb 14ozs.
Other flies mentioned in dispatches included Bibio Midas hog, Olive Muddler, Tutti Frutti hog, and Wee Westie, mostly fished on intermediate lines.
It’s off to Harray next weekend, reports have been sparse, but it’s probably fair to say that it’s not fishing well at the moment, hopefully things will improve.
Congratulations are also in order to the two qualifiers, Sandy and Alan McConnachie from last weeks Scottish National semi final at the Lake of Menteith. In very warm conditions, they handled the Booby Basher fast sinking line technique quickly and will now progress to the final in September, well done, great angling. There’s another 5 anglers down this week in the second semi, good luck and tight lines to all.
