ORKNEY ANGLERS BRAVE THE WEATHER ON HARRAY
It was a fresh WNW wind that greeted 23 hardy anglers for the 10:00am start of The Tommy Thomson Trophy on Sunday. Expectations weren’t particularly high as the loch had been hard going with conditions early on before the wind strengthened, which had many of the anglers seeking some respite from the squalls on the lee shore. Fortunately, the wind eased a bit later and anglers continued to try and put a hard-earned basket together.
At the weigh in it was obvious everybody had worked hard for their fish in the unfavourable conditions. Top rod on the day was cracking basket from James Bews with 9 fish for 8Lb 6 ¼ oz., James worked the lee shore for most of the day from above the Ess Holms down towards the site hut, fishing the top of the water with various small lures. A lot of the anglers fished across the areas of the Ess Holms and the narrows with the sinking lines, but it only paid dividends for some, Sandy McConnachie made the best of it with a good basket of 7 fish for 7Lb 9 ¼ oz., including a belter at 2Lb 4 ½ oz. securing him the heaviest fish of the competition (just a fraction heavier than another 2Lb plus cracker from Merkister Bay, courtesy of Brian Thomas.
A few boats decided to work out of Merkister Bay for most of the day and notable baskets came from Brian Foreman with 9 fish for 8Lb 1 oz and John Munson with 9 fish for 7Lb 9oz both fishing higher up in the water. Other noteworthy baskets on a tough day from various areas were Erlend Hutchison with 9 fish for 6Lb 15 ¾ oz, and Andrew Morgan with 7 fish for 5Lb 15 ½ oz.Flies mentioned in dispatches where Hulks and hogs various guises, Munchkin and allrounder Erlends Cat which performed on the Di7 and fast glass.
