Top Rod Sandy McConnachie

SANDY MCCONNACHIE MAKES IT A HAT-TRICK OF WINS ON BOARDHOUSE

High winds on Saturday put this competition to the following day, Sunday, with flat calm now being the issue for the 22 anglers. Boardhouse had already been discoloured with brown algae present, but the stir up it received on Saturday made parts of the loch unfishable, especially out in the middle in the weeds. The calm didn’t last long and there was a degree of cloud cover so it wasn’t all bad news.
The Narrows and up at the Barony end was most popular at the 10am start with most anglers fishing the shallower water and it was a similar story in the south end with boats on station at Tufta and Crook. As the day wore on, it was soon apparent that fish were going to hard to come by with long spells of no action at all on many drifts. A few daddies made an appearance on the water but although one or two were seen being taken by trout, they were largely ignored.
In hard competition days like these, quite often, a fish per hour is enough to be successful, and so it was for Sandy McConnachie, whose 6 fish for 5lb 1oz was enough to win the Smithfield Shield, showing amazing consistency on Boardhouse this season with this being the third win on the bounce! There were others with 6 fish including James Bews with 6 for 4lb 9ozs and Ken Kennedy with 6 for 3lb 6ozs, and other good baskets from John Munson with 5 for 4lb 3ozs and Brian Thomas with 3 for 3lb 8ozs. There were a couple of contenders for best fish of the day but it was one at 2lb 1oz for Jim Harcus which came out top.
Successful tactics for most of the top rods was floating lines and small Hedgehogs and the likes with Sandy catching half his basket on an Olive Humpy and Munchkin accounting for many others. Jim Bews and Ken Kennedy bucked the trend with James taking his fish on DI5 Sweep and mini lures and Ken fished Suspender Buzzers in the shallow water to good effect.
Huge congratulations must go out to Sandy McConnachie as his win has secured the top spot in the fly league with one competition, the Any Loch, next weekend, still to be fished, he is the OTFA’s Fisherman of the Year. There are still plenty of positions still to be resolved next weekend so all to play for.
Sandy McConnachie, James Bews and Ken Kennedy will not be present next weekend as all three are fishing in the Grey’s Pairs Final down at Lyn Brenig in North Wales next Sunday, tight lines!
