SUN AND WIND ON HARRAY FOR THE WS SINCLAIR CUP
A cold easterly wind and bright blue sky greeted the 27 anglers fishing the WS Sinclair Cup on Harray on Tuesday night. Given the unpalatable conditions, it was surprising to many how well it fished on the night.
Most boats headed north for the 6.30 pm start, with Merkister Bay and Nistaben popular, with many anglers sticking it out in these areas for most of the night. Anglers fished the shallow water around the skerries, but there were one or two who tried sinking lines for a spell with no great success. The hope was that the chilly easterly breeze would drop significantly as the night wore on, but it didn’t until about 10 minutes before the 10.30 pm finish.
Best basket, and it was a notable one, was weighed in by a delighted Jim Harcus, who had 8 fish for 10lb 1oz, winning the WS Sinclair Cup. But there’s more, he also had the heaviest fish, a belter at 2lb 4ozs, and with 5 fish over a pound, it could be difficult to beat for other silverware. Others who cracked the case included Sandy McConnachie with 11 for 8lb 11ozs, Ian Hutcheon with 6 for 6lb 9ozs and Jim Adams with 6 for 6lb. Newcomer to the fly competitions, Stewy Flett deserves praise for his efforts on a difficult night for many others, with 4 for 4lb 5ozs.
With the important SANNAC Qualifier coming up on Sunday, there’s no tic tac on the successful tactics this week, so tight lines and good luck to all taking part in that competition, full report to follow.
