KIRKWALL ANGLERS WIN THE BULLEN CUP
Harray was the venue for this years Bullen Cup, the annual Kirkwall v Stromness match, decided on the average basket weight of team anglers. There was a huge change in weather conditions, with a brisk westerly wind, rain and full cloud cover, replacing the almost tropical conditions we have had for weeks, but would it make a difference to the fishing?
Most boats headed north for the10am start, with many going to Bankhead and Merkister. The rest settled on Bochan and Burrian. The fish had certainly abandoned the really shallow ground on the previous few days, probably due to a big drop in water level over the week. Finding them in the drop offs and deep water would be key to success.
Sandy McConnachie, on top form at the moment, was head and shoulders above the rest at the weigh in, with 17 fish for 13lb 12ozs, and after doing the sums for the average weight for each angler, was awarded the Bullen Cup, with the 12 Kirkwall anglers averaging 7lb 12ozs, to 9 Stromness anglers averaging 4lb 4ozs, a gulf of a difference. Other individuals who scored well included Erlend Hutchison with 12 for 9lb 10ozs, Ian Hutcheon with 10 for 9lb 5 ozs and Colin Sutherland with 11 for 8lb 15ozs. Heaviest fish was 1lb 12ozs, weighed in by Jim Harcus.
The deep water at Bankhead was the hotspot, with all of the top three anglers fishing there all day, Bochan and Tormiston were good for Colin Sutherland.
Winning tactics were either an Airflo DI7 or the Sweep version of the sinking line and mini lures in orange, black and green and more of the usual suspects with again, many fish taken “on the hang” at the end of the retrieve. Floaters and intermediate lines accounted for fish in the shallower water with the Cockeyed Muddler mentioned in dispatches.
The show moves onto Hundland for an evening competion next week, I hope that the strong winds forecast don’t churn it up too much before then.
