Walter Lennie Cup

Top rod Malcolm Russell

HUNDLAND FISHES WELL FOR THE WALTER LENNIE CUP

There was a certain amount of trepidation amongst many of the 21 anglers assembled at Hundland for the Walter Lennie Cup on Wednesday evening. There had been strong, blustery wind for the previous few days, which usually has the loch jumbled up with the look of a cup of coffee. Thankfully, it was a westerly blowing across rather than the length of the loch and it was surprisingly clear, even on the downwind shore.
There were probably as many boats up in the skerries as there were down the shores and out in the middle for the 6.30pm start, and as always, especially on Hundland, it’s location, location, location that’s key.
As the night wore on, there was a lot of changing drifts by the boats, obviously looking for fish. Most engineers were light on the throttle which doesn’t chew up the drifts and spook the fish.
At the weigh in, it soon became apparent that the skerries and shallows hadn’t produced much, while the anglers in the open water amongst the weed beds had fared much better.
Top rod with a fantastic basket of fish was Malcolm Russell, weighing in 14 fish for 10lb 5ozs, to secure the Walter Lennie Cup. Runner up was Erlend Hutchison who also had a bonny bag of fish, 7 for 8lb 1oz, which also included the best fish of the night, a topper at 2lb 2ozs. Others who enjoyed their night included Ken Kennedy with 9 for 6lb 14ozs, John Munson with 6 for 5lb 2ozs, and Norman Irvine with 7 for 4lb 7ozs.
Fast glass and similar intermediate lines were best for many of the top anglers on the night, with Madeira, Hares Ear and Claret hogs were quoted as being top flies, as were Dunkeld Muddler, and Claret Muddler. Thanks to Norman Irvine, Alan Craigie and Colin Sutherland for officiating at the weigh in.
It’s back to Swannay in a weeks time, and there’s the Intercounty in Shetland this weekend, plenty of fishing to be done, tight lines,
KK
