CLOSE CONTEST FOR PETER MILLER MEMORIAL CUP
ON SWANNY
Following two days of strong winds and a cancellation the previous evening, the OTFA fly fishermen were keen to get going on Thursday night, 4th June. There was still a chilly westerly breeze for the 6.30pm start, with no sign of any fly hatch to get the fish active, so, inevitably, it was an evening on the sinking lines searching for the Swannay trout.
20 anglers set off and most headed up the loch from the site, with Long Points, Loudenhill and about the Jimmy Smith skerry, which I must say, has not one, but two, new, brilliant marker buoys expertly placed on top. They should save a few propellers when the water level is higher. Not much running about usually indicates that the boats are finding fish, and this was proven to be correct with some good baskets at the weigh in at 10.30 pm.
Top angler on the night was Allan McConnachie with an impressive 13 fish for 9lb 10 ozs, to secure the Peter Miller Memorial Cup. Heaviest fish was one at 1lb 6 ozs, to Norman Irvine’s rod. Others who made something of it included Norman with 13 for 8lb 12 ozs, Malcolm Russell with 13 for 8lb 4 ozs and Sandy McConnachie with 12 for 7lb 14 ozs.
Successful flies mentioned in the aftermath included the Naked Spur, Ace of Spades and Montana Nymph. Line choice of the winners was a bit different with Alan McConnachie disclosing that he had used a new line! It was a Rio Sweep 6, which most anglers had never heard of. I bet most of them know about it now and are £90 worse off, must have it! For most of the others it was the Airflo Sweep 5, an essential line for Swannay.
Thanks to Sandy and Norman for weigh in duties on the night. Next up is Boardhouse on Sunday for the first visit of the season, you never know what that will bring.
It was pleasing to hear about the successful visit of McKenzie Tackle to Orkney last week, showcasing their rods, jackets and other first class equipment. The casting exhibition from Scott himself was amazing and hopefully it will inspire some of the 80 + audience to get out and start fly fishing. They intend to plan another visit where there will be tuition available for any youngsters interested.
