BOARDHOUSE ON TOP FORM
A stiff westerly wind and sun greeted the 25 anglers fishing the Walter Leask Cup on Sunday 8th June. Not ideal conditions by any means but the jungle drums had suggested the loch was fishing well with good fish on the go, so fingers crossed it would continue.
The relative shelter of the Barony end was popular at the 11am start, but there were boats on all the popular drifts, Tufta, Crook, and off the Pumphouse. Long drifts in open water seemed to be the order of the day, and with very little boat movement, it suggested that anglers were enjoying success.
As the day wore on, the wind dropped a notch or two and there was a wee spell of rain. When the rain ceased, there was a definite rise of fish came on, especially in the Narrows, with many fish taken during this spell.
It quickly became evident as the weigh in started that there were some great baskets taken in particular boats, pointing to the fact that location obvious,y mattered. Top boat, with the anglers each weighing in 19 fish, was Malcolm Russell and John Munson, with the former taking the Walter Leask Cup with a weight of 13lb 10 ozs, only just beating John’s weight of 13lb 8 ozs, outstanding angling from both. Heaviest fish prize went to JimHarcus with a cracker at 1lb 14 ozs. Others at the races included Thorfinn Muir with 17 for 12lb5 ozs, Ken Kennedy with 17 for 11lb 13ozs and Brian Foreman, 15 for 10lb 5ozs,who reported having a great start with 6 in the first 15 minutes! Thanks to Alan Craigie and Leslie Miller for doing the weigh in.
Intermediate and floating lines were the winning order of the day, and flies quoted in the debrief included, Munchkin, Naked Spur, Red Assed Green Peter in both Muddler and hog, claret Muddler, and Wee Westie hog.
Next on the calendar is the Midnight Cup which isn’t fished until midnight any more, on Friday the 20th June, fishing 18.30 until 23.30, could be Caenis time by then.
