MIXED FORTUNES IN THE MIDNIGHT CUP

Unbelievably, the Midnight Cup on Boardhouse on Friday night marked the half way point in the fly-fishing competition programme. For some, Boardhouse was very kind, with plenty of fish caught, while others could hardly get a pull on this most enigmatic of lochs.
Another good turnout saw 25 anglers set sail for the 6.30 pm start, while a few boats set up drifts on the shores at Crook and the Barony, most were found in open water, with the Pumphouse and the Narrows quite congested. There was a reasonable breeze which started northerly but swung more to the south later on and decreased enough for a Caenis hatch which reached biblical proportions. At one point, there was at first what looked like plumes of smoke on the shoreline, which in actual fact were swarms of the wee white fly and the fish were up in shoals gorging on them, but they were extremely difficult to illicit a response from, but as always, there’s a few anglers who crack the case.
Top rod on the night with a fantastic basket was Thorfinn Muir with 14 fish for 8lb 14 ozs, securing the Midnight Cup. The few others who made something of it, included, Erlend Hutchison with 10 for 8lb 5 ozs, which included the heaviest fish of the night which went 2lb 5ozs, one of the heaviest weighed in this season, Stewy Leslie with 12 for 7lb 14ozs, Gary Ballantyne 10 for 7lb 3ozs and John Leask 9 for 6lb 8ozs.
Various intermediate and tip lines were good early on, coupled with hogs in peach, claret and burnt orange, many with white Muddler heads added. Later on, when there were shoals of fish up hoovering up the scents, it was floating lines and Suspenders and Shipman’s buzzers which brought success for some, but the fish were really spooky.
Thanks to Norman, Alan and Leslie at the weigh-in and congratulations to Jim Adams and Sandy McConnachie on qualifying for the Scottish National final to be fished at the Lake of Menteith in September. Tight lines and good luck to those fishing next week’s semifinal.
A day competition on Swannay next weekend is what the rest of us have to look forward to, tight lines.
