WINDY DAY ON SWANNAY FOR EUNSON CUP
A strong and gusty westerly wind were the conditions for the 11am start on Swannay last Sunday, with 26 anglers fishing for the Eunson Cup. The strength of the wind was forecasted to decrease all day, but the sun broke through and kept the wind strength up for the duration.
Shelter was the first thought of anglers for the start of the day, with all boats heading for the west shore, with Loudenhill, Long Points and Ernie’s most popular. There was cloud for the first hour and the fish were certainly up in the water and feeding, with rods bent into fish right away. The sun broke through and the wind actually increased, slowing things down as the fish went off. Later on, about 4 o’clock, the cloud returned, the wind dropped and the fish came on again.
It was definitely a day to be in the bow of the boat, as the top four placing show, it’s just easier to fish properly, hang your flies longer etc. Making it back to back wins on Swannay was a delighted Alan McConnachie, taking the Eunson Cup with 14 fish for 10lb 13ozs, a great effort on a difficult day. Runner up, Stewy Leslie, had 2 more fish with 16 for 8lb 14ozs, and others who excelled in the conditions included, Sandy McConnachie with 13 for 8lb 9 ozs, Malcolm Russell with 11 for 7lb 13 ozs and Norman Irvine’s basket of 9 for 6lb 13ozs also had the heaviest fish going 1lb 4ozs.
Pulling sinking lines was the order of the day, with Alan McConn singing the praises of his Rio Sweep 6 and others quoted Airflo Sweep7s and 5’s as their weapon of choice. Flies were standard fare with Naked Spur and Erlends Cat getting a big shout at the post match discussion.
Harray is the next venue in a couple of weeks time, pray for less wind and more cloud, tight lines,
