Ferry Loupers trophy

Raymond Miller Top rod

YOU PAYS YOUR MONEY AND TAKES YOUR CHANCE IN THE FERRYLOUPERS TROPHY

Harray is very tricky at the moment with very high water levels affecting the fishing, so last Wednesday night, it was a case of picking the method you prefer. That could be fishing the shallower water with intermediate and floating lines, or open water drifts with the fast sinking rigs, either could conceivably provide the winning basket.
There were 24 hopeful anglers signed in for the Ferryloupers Trophy, fishing 6.30pm to 10.30pm on Wednesday night. The weather wasn’t too unkind to start, but there was a sting in the tail later on when the westerly whipped up to be very strong and gusty, making it a very uncomfortable run back to the site for those fishing the north end of the loch. Bochan, Burrian, Merkister Bay and Kirkness were popular with the boats at the start, but some had to bail out as it was too rough to fish properly in the strengthening wind.
Best basket came from the mouth of Merkister Bay where Raymond Miller netted 8 quality fish for 7lb 1oz, runner up on the night was Sandy McConnachie with 9 fish for 6lb 10ozs. Others who made something of it included Gary Ballantyne with 8 for 6lb 9ozs, Jim Adams with 7 for 6lb 8ozs and Stewy Leslie with 7 for 6lb 4ozs. A special mention this week goes out for the heaviest fish weighed in, a belter at 1lb 11ozs, caught by schoolboy Tommy Tulloch, great angling lad!
With it being the Ferryloupers Trophy, the average weight of each anglers catch is calculated to decide who wins the cup. So, the Locals had 16 anglers fishing, total weight, 62lb 12 3/4ozs for an average of 3lb 14 3/4ozs, and the Ferryloupers had 8 in their team, weighing a total of 35lb 2 3/4ozs, for an average of 4lb 6 1/4ozs, giving them the win, therefore the trophy goes to their top angler Sandy McConnachie who will be delighted with another cup to polish.
The anglers on the fast sinking lines had the upper hand with most on the straight DI7, with Erlends Cat, Hulk, Cod and Chips and the likes the flies of choice, whereas Madeira, Munchkin hogs caught a few in the shallows. Sandy McConnachie is having a great year and has built up a substantial lead in the quest for Fisherman of the Year, but there’s plenty other places to resolve.
Next on the agenda is the competition where there is a draw for partners prior to the day, which is on Boardhouse, Sunday 20th July, tight lines!
