MONSOON CONDITIONS HIT BOARDHOUSE DURING WILLIE WINDWICK CUP

Once again, the weather forecast was wide of the mark with a strong SE wind for the 11am start on Boardhouse on Sunday, but at least we had some cloud.
This competition is proving to be very popular, with a draw for partners beforehand giving anglers the opportunity to fish with a different partner. Thanks to Leslie Miller for organising this event which the 24 anglers find very enjoyable.
The 11am start saw all the boats heading for shelter on the south shore at Tufta etc, with nobody starting north of the site. Initially, it was a bit like fishing in a washing machine with big waves in the scuddy wind, but the fish were up in the oxygenated water and could be caught right from the off. As the day wore on, the wind dropped but so did the fishing, with offers reducing with the wind. Then the rain started, culminating in monsoon conditions, I don’t think it could have rained any harder, with rain stotting down.
As is very common on the enigma that is Boardhouse, success was very ill divided, with some anglers regularly boating fish and others struggling to find them. Generally the fish were out in the middle of the loch, out off the Pumphouse with very little found in the shallow water.
Mastering the conditions and marching on at the top of the leader board was Sandy McConnachie, winning the Willie Windwick Cup with a brilliant 16 fish for 10lb 14ozs, a tally which others could only wonder at. Others who claimed some level of success included Ian Hutcheon with 12 for 7lb 8ozs, Erlend Hutchison, also with a dozen for 7lb 3ozs, Mike Frith, 8 for 5lb 12ozs and Raymond Miller with 6 for 5lb 5ozs. Heaviest fish came on the last cast of the day for Ian Hutcheon, a cracker at 1lb 12ozs.
Sandy fished hogs on a fast glass out in the open water off the Pumphouse, with many fish coming on the first few pulls of the retrieve, while Ian Hutcheon fished the floating line all day. Particularly successful flies included Zulu, Hares Ear, Munchkin and Coral hogs. The thing is, most anglers would have been fishing similar rigs but on just doesn’t work for many, that’s Boardhouse for you, feast or famine.
The next competition is an evening on Boardhouse, deep joy! Tight lines.
