DIFFICULT NIGHT ON BOARDHOUSE FOR SMITHFIELD SHIELD
Bright sun and a stiff breeze from the north certainly didn’t help in raising any enthusiasm for this evening competition on Boardhouse. That said, there’s always a way to get them if you fish to the conditions.
23 anglers set out for the 6pm start, spreading out over the whole loch, both on the shores and open water, with the Barony end seeing most pressure. Other popular starting points were the Tufta shore and off the Pumphouse. As the wind dropped, boats moved more to open water looking for rising fish, but the Caenis never made an appearance so rising fish were few and far between until the last ten minutes. A good few anglers saved the dreaded blank in these last few minutes.
The previous night saw good fishing conditions with cloud and a good wave and those up for a recce had good sport, top of the water, but the competition nights sun and wind put the fish down making it difficult for those who stuck with the high lines. Ian Hutcheon put a good basket together over the course of the night fishing DI 5 Sweep line and mini lures, taking the Smithfield Shield with 5 for 5lb 2ozs. Others who found fish included Thorfinn Muir with 6 for 4lb 6ozs, Gary Ballantyne with 4 for 3lb 7oz, Phillipe Avril, 4 for 2lb 14ozs, and Leslie Miller, 4 for 2lb 11ozs, with the heaviest fish weighed in by Stephen Pattinson, a nice one going 1lb 13ozs.
Flies mentioned in the aftermath included, Slimline Ace, Viva, Erchie, Humpy and Red Assed Green Peter. Last weeks report alluded to Boardhouse being an enigmatic loch, which can do your head in completely. This weeks result is a typical example where last weeks winner of the competition was bottom of the list this week, nightmare of a place!
It’s on to Harray next weekend, tough going there I believe lately, tight lines.
