HARD GOING ON HARRAY FOR BULLEN CUP
Conditions were far from favourable for Saturday mornings 10am start of the Bullen Cup on Harray. A brisk southwesterly ramped up as the sun came out later in the day, coupled with poor water quality, made it a struggle for many anglers.
All boats headed north at the gun, with many seeking the shelter of Bankhead, Merkister, and Pontooth, but even then it was quite blashy at times. Fishing over shallow water is the only hope of a fish at the moment, which makes for a hard day for those on the engine, manoeuvring through the skerries with a fast drifting boat.
Things didn’t improve as the day wore on, but there were one or two boats who picked away all day with fish from the quieter water of Decca, Kirkness and Pontooth. It’s the Bullen Cup so there’s a sum to do before the cup winner is announced, but best basket by a country mile on the day came from Sandy McConnachie, weighing in 11 fish for 10lb 9ozs, astonishing to the half a dozen anglers who failed to weigh in a fish. Others who made a fist of it included Alan McConnachie, Ian Hutcheon, Stewy Leslie and Ken Kennedy. The Bullen Cup is awarded to the best basket of the side that has the best average aggregate, so Kirkwall had 12 anglers whose aggregate weight was 40lb 9 3/4ozs, averaging 3lb 6ozs, and Stromness had 10 anglers, aggregate weight of 35lb 6 1/4ozs, averaging 3lb 8 1/4ozs, so Stewy Leslie takes the cup home as the best basket from the Stromness lads.
Winning tactics were to fish quieter water in the lea, and fast tip, intermediate and fast glass lines to get down a bit in the water, with many fish taken on the swoop up and hanging your flies. Peach was powerful as were Olive and Black patterns like Peach Muddler, Peach Midge, Ace of Spades, Olive Cat and the likes.
