HUNDLAND DOES NOT DISAPPOINT IN WALTER LENNIE CUP
Yet another competition hampered by sun and strong winds, but if there’s one loch that can fish in these conditions, it’s Hundland.
A marked increase in entry to 28, squeezed into the site at Hundland for the 6.30 pm start. The absence of weed across the loch certainly helped with most boats finding a clear drift at the start. Throughout the night there was plenty of boats repositioning their drift back up the loch and it was commendable to see everyone cutting back on the throttle to reduce disturbance.
There’s always one angler who gets everything right and tonight it was Thorfinn Muir with a cracking basket of fish, head and shoulders above the rest of the field, 14 fish for 9lb 10ozs, lifting the Walter Lennie Cup. Jim Harcus was runner up, and others who did, in descending order, included, Sandy McConnachie, Ken Kennedy and Norman Irvine. There were a few contenders for heaviest fish, but Brian Foreman’s fish at 1lb 14 1/2 ozs won it by 1/2oz.
Hundland has the reputation for being Hedgehog central as far as successful flies go, and Wednesday night was no different, with Madeira, Claret, Hares Ear and Thorfinn’s top fly, the Munchkin all figuring in the debrief. Floating, Slow and Fast Glass lines were all in evidence for those who caught.
There’s a week’s respite until we head for Swannay and see what that brings, a bit of warmth, cloud and lighter winds would be welcome.
