STEWY LESLIE SWEEPS UP THE PETER MILLER TROPHY ON SWANNAY
Last Wednesday night on Swannay was another uncomfortable sit for the 26 anglers fishing for the Peter Miller Trophy. A gusting SE wind and, eventually, coupled with rain and a drop in temperature certainly wasn’t what you would expect for June.
There was an obvious hot spot for the 6.30pm when about 6 boats took up station for drifts out from the Muckle Holm out to the Jimmy Smith skerry, with others spread about, mostly in the south end. Some of the boats just had one drift and carried on north to Loudenhill, Long Points and Ernie’s. The deeper water was obviously working for many, with boats fishing open water all night. One boat fished the drift out from the island all night, and they were ultimately first and second following the weigh in, with Stewy Leslie taking the Peter Miller Trophy with 15 fish for 9lb 1 1/2ozs, just pipping boat partner Ken Kennedy who also had 15 fish which were 3/4oz lighter! Others who overcame the conditions included Ian Hutcheon, Gary Ballantyne and Sandy McConnachie. There were a few contenders for heaviest fish, with Jim Harcus weighing in the best of them which went 1lb 7 1/2ozs.
The “Sweep” models of fast intermediate and sinking lines were all responsible for the top baskets, with Stewy on the Airflo Sweep 3, Ken on the Rio Clean Sweep 6 and Hutch and McConn on the Airflo Sweep 5. Flies were the standard fare with Christmas Tree, McConn’s Ace, Naked Spur all mentioned in dispatches.
The show rolls on to Boardhouse at the weekend, and again, some quieter weather would be greatly appreciated.
