BRIGHT SUN AND STRONG WINDS FOR WALTER LEASK CUP ON BOARDHOUSE
The weather gods are not listening! The request for light winds and cloud was totally ignored as Saturday was yet another difficult day for those on the engine, with a very strong and blusterywind from the South for the 11am start. The sun quickly burned off what little cloud there was and this ramped up the wind speed further.
A reduced numb er of entrants to 19 looked for a bit of shelter from the start, with many boats heading for Tufta Shore, with some others looking for the same down at the Barony end. It
wasn't long before boats binned Plan A to search out for fish elsewhere. A lot of boats headed for the shores for shelter, fishing the shallower water, but one boat in particular fished right down the middle, from Tufta to the Pumphouse, in the roughest water.Winning the Walter Leask Cup, out in the big wave was Ken Kennedy, with 19 fish for 15lb 11ozs, an exceptional effort given the conditions. Runner up was John Munson with another great weigh in of 12 fish for 10lb 14ozs. Others who overcame the testing conditions included,Malcolm Russell, Steve Pattinson and Stewy Leslie. Heaviest fish of the day was a cracker at 1lb 14 1/2ozs from Kenny Adam. Thanks to Norman Irvine and Leslie Miller for the slick weigh in as always.
Ken fished the Cortland Blue intermediate line and small Hogsand Muddlers, with the Madeira hog, Kate McLaren hog, Doobry and skinny Claret Dabbler his best flies, others fished Olive, Purple Hogs and the Wee Westie also got a mention. It was definitely a day for fishing out of the bow of the boat, where you areable to control your flies more easily, and speaking of boats, it was fantastic to see Leslie Miller skippering his newly completed boat, the Finn Olaf, through the
Boardhouse waves with ease, it's a beauty! There's a couple of weeks until the next competition, again on Boardhouse for the Midnight Cup. Next weekend the OTFA were due to host Shetland AA in the annual Intercounty, but sadly and
embarrassingly, Shetland couldn't raise a team. Hopefully OTFA can rearrange it for later in the
year, to keep the tradition going.
