OLIVES KEY TO SUCCESS ON BOARDHOUSE
Following yet another blooter of wind on the previous days, 20 anglers set forth on Tuesday evening to fish for the Walter Leask Trophy. The water quality was surprisingly good with much of the turbidity having dropped out, leaving just a light peat stain, undoubtedly coming from Hundland which is high at the minute.
Once again, the Pumphouse and south of it were popular at the start, with many boats starting their first drift in the Tufta area. The SW breeze came and went for much of the evening, and it was even light enough for a smattering of Caenis, but it was a steady hatch of Olives in the Narrows which proved to be crucial to the final outcome.
One boat was right on the money, and it was Stephen Pattinson who made the most of it, winning the Walter Leask Trophy with a remarkable 11 fish for 6lb 12ozs, superb angling to win his first competition in the OTFA fly league. Others who were there or there about included, runner up Allan McConnachie with 9 for 5lb 6ozs, Brian Foreman with 7 for 5lb 5ozs, his boat partner Leslie Miller with 8 for 4lb 9ozs, and Stewy Leslie with 6 for 4lb 3ozs. Heaviest fish on the night, and the best of the season so far, was a pearler going 2lb 9ozs from Sandy McConnachie. Once again, many thanks go to Norman Irvine and Leslie Miller for the slick weigh in.
For many anglers, that could be their last competition on Boardhouse this season, with just two Harray and one Any Loch to go, and many will be glad to see the back of this most enigmatic loch.
Stephen fished an intermediate line and small olive emergers to great effect, with Allan McConnachie on a fast sinking line with Erlends Cat and Norski Lad his top flies. Messers Foreman and Miller did well with the Clan Chief and The Horrible Thing doing well for them.
It’s on to Harray next weekend, and with the weather looking quite settled and cooling down, things look promising, tight lines!
