HARRAY ON FORM FOR THE END OF THE COMPETITION SEASON.
The finale for the fly fishers is the Alan Findlay Cup, where anglers have the choice of all the main lochs to fish. The 26 entrants spread over three of the lochs, with Harray most popular, and a few on Swannay and Hundland, nobody ventured out on the enigmatic Boardhouse. As well as the cup on the day, the Fly Fisherman of the Year Trophy would also be concluded, and with three anglers still in the running, it was going to be an exciting weigh in come 4pm.
The north westerly wind which had really spoiled the week before as far as a recce was concerned had dropped to an almost sensible level, and with cloud, it looked promising for the 10am start.
As it turned out, the place to be was Harray, with the top three baskets of the day weighed in from there, John Munson took the top slot, winning the Alan Findlay Cup with 11 fish for 10lb 13ozs, one of the bonniest baskets of the season, runner up was Stewy Flett who also had 11 belters for 10lb, and third was Brian Thomson with 10 for 9lb 5ozs. There were a few contenders for heaviest fish but it was Brian Foreman’s fish from Hundland, going 1lb 13ozs, which took that accolade. Thanks to Norman and Leslie for officiating and weighing and measuring etc, great job boys, and one which is appreciated by us all.
Now to the Fisherman of the Year result, it turned out that all of the anglers with a chance of winning went to Swannay, where Stewy Leslie had 11 for 8lb 11ozs, and the 13 points gained gave him an unassailable lead, even with Sandy McConnachie and Norman Irvine hard on his heals with good baskets, also from Swannay. Stewy was pronounced the winner following the weigh in, a very popular result with his fellow anglers as the applause showed. The top six in descending order are Stewy Leslie, Sandy McConnachie, Norman Irvine, Ken Kennedy, Ian Hutcheon and James Bews, congratulations all.
Harray tactics were top of the water with intermediate and tip lines, and flies included the Munchkin, Clan Chief hog, Olive and claret hogs, Doobry Muddler, Boris and Merky Maid.
It doesn’t seem like we’ve had 14 competitions already this year, I can’t remember half of them, probably because you tend to only remember the good fishing days!
The league competition may be over but there’s still the rearranged Inter County to fish, so plenty of fishing to come next weekend, tight lines!
